International Education Week Nov. 13-19

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Friday, November 13
7:00-9:00 PM KCC Ohia Cafeteria - A Conversation
with Jon Shirota at Kapi‘olani Community
College. This free event will celebrate Jon Shirota’s literary achievements and contributions to the local, national,and international Okinawan communities. Entertainment will be provided by noted Okinawan dance and sanshin performers in Hawai‘i

Monday, November 16
10:00-11:00 AM Great Lawn Burmese Chinlone
is a national sport played with a cane or rattan ball and is played by 6 players, one who goes to the center to solo. There are many beautiful classic movements in this sport which is over 1500 years old. Come out and try for yourself!

11:00-11:30 AM Ohia Cafeteria Capoeira
Hawaii See a beautiful Afro-Brazilian martial art which appears more like a fluid dance, with beautiful fluid acrobatic movements. Accompanied by the music of the berimaus (strung gourd) and captivating song, capoeira is often performed in a circle, and the players sing, clap and encourage the dancers to excel in their movements

including the spread of major global languages
and how they contribute to language
extinction, and some political and social reasons that some languages have been repressed. This film
